It’s an uncertain world and all well-managed businesses have considered and planned for the loss of key systems, networks and sites. At the very least this entails a robust back-up strategy with off-site storage, but for a business that can’t afford hours, let alone days of lost production, some form of real-time data-mirroring and fail-over is also essential. There are many excellent products to deliver on both these needs – products from EMC and Double-Take for example. Such products are usually very frugal with their storage requirements and use some form of de-duplication at the storage level, but on the other hand they can be very bandwidth hungry in operation and this can mean:
