What is ZTNA?
ZTNA — Zero Trust Network Access — is a security model that gives users access to specific applications and services rather than to a network as a whole. Instead of trusting anyone who sits inside the perimeter (the traditional VPN model), every access request is authenticated, authorised and encrypted on a per-session basis, regardless of where the user is or what network they’re on. Identity and policy decide what someone can reach, not IP addresses. The result is a much smaller attack surface: a compromised credential exposes only the handful of applications that user was entitled to, not the entire flat network behind a VPN concentrator.
How does ZTNA compare with a traditional VPN?
ZTNA is more secure than a VPN, and with Replify Secure Access, it’s faster too. A VPN extends your network to the user. Once they’re connected, they sit on the corporate LAN — and so does anyone who steals their credentials or compromises their device. ZTNA inverts that model: the user never joins the network at all. They authenticate against your identity provider, and Replify Secure Access brokers a connection to only the specific applications they’re entitled to use. Lateral movement becomes practically impossible because there’s no flat network to move across. ZTNA is also typically simpler to operate at scale. Policies are written in terms of users, groups and applications rather than subnets and firewall rules. You also get the benefits whether the user is in the office, at home or on hotel Wi-Fi.
What is self-hosted ZTNA?
Replify Secure Access is designed to run wherever you want it, with no vendor cloud component required. Self-hosted ZTNA means the entire control plane and data plane of the solution runs on infrastructure you own or rent — your own servers, your private data centre, or a cloud account in your name. With most ZTNA products, the policy controller and a portion of user traffic flow through the vendor’s own cloud, which means your security posture and your data both depend on a third party. Self-hosted ZTNA removes that dependency. For organisations with data sovereignty requirements — GDPR, public sector, regulated industries — or those that simply prefer to keep their security perimeter in their own hands, it’s the only acceptable model.
How can Replify Secure Access accelerate applications?
Replify Secure Access includes the WAN optimization technology from our core product, applied directly to the ZTNA traffic path. As data moves between the user and the application it’s compressed, cached and processed with protocol-level optimisations that cut the number of round-trips and the volume of data on the wire. The effect is most pronounced on long-distance or low-bandwidth connections — exactly the scenarios where most ZTNA solutions feel slowest.
